Brimonidine Tartrate + Timolol Maleate
Brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate is a combination medication of an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (brimonidine tartrate) and a beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist (timolol maleate). It is an ophthalmic solution used to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate is indicated for the treatment of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
The usual recommended dose of brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. It should be used as directed by a physician.
The most common adverse reactions include:
- Ocular hyperemia
- Ocular allergic reactions (including itching, burning, stinging)
- Somnolence
- Headache
- Conjunctivitis
- Corneal erosion
- Hypertension
- Dry mouth
- Blurred vision
- Eye discharge
- Brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate is not recommended for patients with bronchial asthma, a history of bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sinus bradycardia, second or third-degree atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, cardiogenic shock, or hypersensitivity to any component of this medication.
- Caution should be exercised when using brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate in patients with severe cardiovascular disease, depression, cerebrovascular insufficiency, Raynaud's phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension, or thromboangiitis obliterans.
- Brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate may cause respiratory and cardiac reactions, including bronchospasm and cardiac failure, in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, or congestive heart failure.
- Patients should be advised not to drive or operate machinery until they know how brimonidine tartrate + timolol maleate affects them.
- Use of this medication may result in decreased mental alertness and impaired physical ability.
Contraindication
Brimonidine Tartrate + Timolol Maleate is contraindicated in-
- Patients hypersensitive to any component of the formulation
- Patients receiving monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor therapy, tricyclic antidepressants such as-
- Patients on antidepressants which affect noradrenergic transmission such as-

- Reactive airway disease including bronchial asthma
- asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
- Sinus bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome sino-atrial block, second or third degree
- atrioventricular block not controlled with a pace-maker, overt cardiac failure
- cardiogenic shock
- Use in neonates and infants (less than 2 years of age)
