Erythromycin
Erythromycin is a macrolide antibiotic. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic that binds to the 50s subunit of the bacterial ribosome and inhibits its protein synthesis.
Erythromycin is indicated for the following infections-
- Upper & lower respiratory tract infections- Tonsilitis, Laryngitis, Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Whooping cough.
- Ear infections.
- Eye infections.
- Skin infections
- Gastrointestinal infections
- Surgical prophylaxis
Erythromycin is available as tablets, suspension and oral drops.
Adults and children over the age of eight should take 2g daily in divided doses for mild to moderate illnesses. In severe infections, up to 4g per day may be required.
How to reconstitute erythromycin powder for suspension:
The side effects of erythromycin is usually mild and resolve without the need of terminating the treatment. The most common side effects are-
- Nausea
- Eosinophilia
- Fever
- Vomiting
- Allergic reactions
- Jaundice
- Liver dysfunction
Long term use of erythromycin can induce Long QT syndrome.
- Erythromycin can cause hepatotoxicity.
- Rhabdomyolysis with or without renal impairment has been reported in seriously ill patients receiving erythromycin concomitantly with lovastatin.
- Long QT intervals have been observed in patients treated with macrolides, including erythromycin, indicating effects on cardiac repolarisation and increasing the risk of cardiac arrhythmia and torsades de pointes.
- Nearly all antibacterial drugs, including macrolides, have been linked to pseudomembranous colitis, which can range in severity from moderate to life-threatening.
Contraindication
- Erythromycin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any drugs of the macrolide class, such as-

- Terfenadine
- Astemizole
- Cisapride
- pimozide,
There is no known contraindication of erythromycin in terms of food & drinks.
Erythromycin should not be prescribed tp patients with underlying liver diseases and heart conditions like arrythmia.
