Pyridoxine Hydrochloride
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride is a water soluble form of pyridoxine or Vitamin B6. Vitamin B6 is a vitamin that benefits the central nervous system and metabolism. Its roles include turning food into energy and helping to create neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine.
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride is indicated for-
- Vitamin B6 deficiency
- Peripheral neuropathy caused by certain medications (e.g., as isoniazid)
- Xanthurenic aciduria, hyperoxaluria, homocystinuria
Vitamin B6 deficiency
- Adult: Up to 150 mg daily.
Homocystinuria, Primary hyperoxaluria, Sideroblastic anemia
- Adult: 200-600 mg daily. Lifelong administration may be needed to avoid recurrence.
Isoniazid-induced peripheral neuropathy
- Adult: 50 mg thrice a day; up to 200 mg daily may be given.
Parenteral
Vitamin B6 deficiency
- Adult: 10-20 mg daily for 3 weeks via IV or IM injection, then shift to oral daily therapy for several weeks.
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride may cause the following side effects-
- Severe peripheral neuropathies
- Nausea
- Ataxia
- Metabolic acidosis
- Headache
- Somnolence
Precaution is advised in Pregnancy and lactation.
