Antazoline Hydrochloride

Antazoline Hydrochloride is a first-generation antihistamine and anticholinergic agent with selective H1 receptor antagonist activity. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors, which are responsible for the symptoms of allergic reactions, including itching, redness, and swelling. It also has mild anticholinergic activity, which helps to reduce the symptoms of ocular irritation, such as tearing and itching.

Antazoline Hydrochloride (ophthalmic) is indicated for the temporary relief of itching, redness, and watering of the eyes caused by allergies, including hay fever, dust, animal hair, and other environmental allergens. It is also used to relieve symptoms associated with inflammation and irritation of the conjunctiva and other ocular surfaces.

The usual dose of Antazoline Hydrochloride (ophthalmic) is one or two drops in the affected eye(s) up to four times daily, or as directed by a physician. The duration of treatment should be limited to 2 weeks.

Adverse reactions associated with the use of Antazoline Hydrochloride (ophthalmic) are generally mild and transient. The most common adverse reactions include:

  • Burning, stinging, or discomfort in the eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Dryness or irritation of the eyes
  • Headache

  • Antazoline Hydrochloride should not be used for prolonged periods without regular ophthalmic monitoring.
  • Antazoline Hydrochloride may cause temporary blurring of vision. Patients should be advised not to drive or operate heavy machinery until their vision has cleared.
  • Antazoline Hydrochloride should be used with caution in patients with a history of glaucoma or other eye diseases that increase intraocular pressure.
  • Antazoline Hydrochloride should be used with caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease or hypertension.
  • Antazoline Hydrochloride should be used with caution in patients who are taking other medications that can cause sedation or drowsiness.

Contraindication

Antazoline Hydrochloride (ophthalmic) is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to antihistamines or any of the components of the product.

It should not be used in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or untreated open-angle glaucoma.
