Flavoxate Hydrochloride

Flavoxate Hydrochloride is an antimuscarinic agent. It exerts its pharmacological effects by directly relaxing the smooth muscle of the urinary tract, primarily the detrusor muscle.

Flavoxate Hydrochloride is indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with voiding dysfunctions, such as those seen in cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, and related conditions.

  • Adults: The recommended adult dosage is one tablet (200 mg) three times a day for as long as required.
  • Pediatric population: The safety and efficacy of Flavoxate Hydrochloride in children aged <12 years have not yet been established.

Common Adverse Reactions include-

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Age Limitation:

    • The use of the medication is not recommended in children below the age of 12 years.
  • Renal Impairment:

    • Caution is advised in patients with renal impairment, as the renal clearance of the active metabolite accounts for more than 50% of the dose.
    • Monitoring and dose adjustment may be necessary in individuals with impaired renal function.
  • Lactose Content:

    • The tablets contain lactose.
    • The use of the medication is not recommended in patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance.
    • Caution is advised in individuals with total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption due to the lactose content.

Contraindication

Flavoxate HCl) is contraindicated in patients who have any of the following obstructive conditions: pyloric or duodenal obstruction, obstructive intestinal lesions or ileus, achalasia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage and obstructive uropathies of the lower urinary tract.
