Ertapenem

Ertapenem is a carbapenem class antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It kills bacteria by inhibiting synthesis of bacterial cell wall. It is a broad spectrum beta lactam antibiotic.

Ertapenem is indicated for the following infections caused by susceptible bacteria-

  • Intra-abdominal infections.
  • Skin and skin structure infections, including diabetic foot infections without osteomyelitis. (1.2)
  • Community-acquired pneumonia.
  • Complicated urinary tract infections including pyelonephritis. 
  • Acute pelvic infections including postpartum endomyometritis, septic abortion and post surgical gynecologic infections. 
  • Surgical prophylaxis

Ertapenem is administered via the intravenous and intra-mascular route as infusions. For patients over 13 years of age, the recommended dose is 1 gram per day and for patients under 13 years the dose is 15mg/kg.

The commonly reported side effects of ertapenem are-

  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Headache

 

  • Serious hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions have been reported in patients receiving β-lactams
  • Seizures and other central nervous system adverse experiences have been reported during treatment
  • Co-administration of Ertapenem with valproic acid or divalproex sodium reduces the serum concentration of valproic acid potentially increasing the risk of breakthrough seizures.
  • Caution should be taken when administering Ertapenem intramuscularly to avoid inadvertent injection into a blood vessel.

Contraindication

  • Known hypersensitivity to product components or anaphylactic reactions to β-lactams. 
  • Due to the use of lidocaine HCl as a diluent, Ertapenem administered intramuscularly is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type.

 

 

There is no known contraindication of Ertapenem in terms of Food and drinks.

Patients suffering from seizures and being treated with valporic acid are contraindicated to use Ertapenem.
