Elemental Iron
Iron is a mineral necessary for various physiological functions. It is especially needed for the synthesis of hemoglobin and various enzymes.
Iron supplements are indicated for iron deficiency, specially during pregnancy.
The dosage of elemental iron differs in people of different ages and gender. The usual dose is as follows. Follow your physician's instructions.
- Children: 7-11 mg/day
- Female: 8-15 mg/day
- Pregnant: 27 mg/day
- Male: 8-11 mg/day
Elemental iron may cause the following side effects-
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Taste disturbances (metallic taste)
- Constipation

Iron absorption is inadequate in patients who have had a gastric bypass.

Iron preparations should be used with caution in people who have had a peptic ulcer or inflammatory bowel illness, such as regional enteritis or ulcerative colitis.

Patients with intestinal strictures or diverticula should be treated with caution.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to any component of the medication.
