Coal Tar Solution

Coal Tar Solution belongs to the class of keratoplastics. Its mechanism of action is attributed to its antipruritic and anti-inflammatory properties. Coal tar is thought to exert its effects by reducing the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes and modulating inflammation, making it useful in the treatment of various dermatological conditions.

Coal Tar Solution is indicated for the topical treatment of various dermatoses, including psoriasis, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, and other hyperkeratotic skin conditions. It is commonly used to alleviate symptoms such as itching, scaling, and inflammation associated with these skin disorders.

  • Apply a thin layer of Coal Tar Solution to the affected areas once or twice daily.
  • Duration of treatment may vary based on the specific dermatosis and individual response.

Adverse reactions are generally rare, and the following list is sorted by most common to least common:

  • Local irritation (burning or itching)
  • Erythema (redness)
  • Dryness or peeling of the skin
  • Allergic contact dermatitis
  • Photosensitivity
  • Skin Sensitivity: Some individuals may be more sensitive to coal tar. Conduct a patch test before widespread use to assess for potential irritation or allergic reactions.

  • Photosensitivity: Coal tar may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Advise patients to minimize sun exposure and use sunscreen during treatment.

  • Avoid Mucous Membranes: Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. In case of accidental contact, rinse thoroughly with water.

  • Staining: Coal tar may stain clothing and fabrics. Use caution to prevent staining, and advise patients accordingly.

  • Pregnancy and Lactation: Use during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant.

  • Underlying Skin Infections: Assess and treat any underlying skin infections before initiating Coal Tar Solution therapy.

Contraindication

Coal Tar Solution is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to coal tar or any of the components of the formulation.
