Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate

Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate is a combination antibiotic drug for veterinary use. Ampicillin is a penicillin-class antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, while Colistin Sulphate is a polypeptide antibiotic that damages the bacterial cell membrane leading to cell death.

Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate is indicated for the treatment of bacterial infections in cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, and cats caused by susceptible organisms. These infections include respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and urinary tract infections.

  • Poultry: 1 gm per 2 liter of drinking water for (3 – 5) days.
  • Calves, lambs, and other animals: 20 – 50 mg Ampicillin per 1 kg body weight daily (equal to 2.5 mg per 10 kg body weight daily). Via drinking water, milk or feed, for 4-5 days. Dose can be doubled in acute and chronic cases.
  • WITHDRAWAL PERIOD:
    – Poultry: 1 day.
    – Calves: 15 days before slaughtering.

This combination is well tolerated by animals at the recommended dosage.

  • Use of Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate should be avoided in animals with a known history of hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or polymyxins.
  • The use of the drug should be monitored in animals with renal or hepatic impairment.
  • Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate should not be used for the treatment of viral or fungal infections.
  • Use of the drug should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation unless the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
  • The use of antibiotics, including Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate, can lead to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can affect both animals and humans.

Contraindication

Ampicillin + Colistin Sulphate is contraindicated in animals with a known history of hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, or polymyxins.
