Toltrazuril

Toltrazuril is a coccidiostat belonging to the triazinone class of compounds. It acts by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase, which is necessary for the synthesis of DNA and RNA in coccidia, thus preventing their multiplication.

Toltrazuril is indicated for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria spp. in poultry, turkeys, and calves.

  • For oral administration via drinking water.
    • Poultry, turkeys : 100 ml per 100 litres of drinking water for continuous medication during 48 hours or 300 ml per 100 litres of drinking water for 8 hours each day during 2 days (= 7 mg toltrazuril per kg bodyweight).
    • Calves, sheep, goats, pigs : 0.8 ml (= 20 mg toltrazuril) per kg bodyweight during 2 days.
  • In case of increased or lowered water intake adjust the medication concentrations accordingly, to obtain a daily dose of 7 mg toltrazuril per kg bodyweight. If necessary repeat after 5 days.
  • Medicated drinking water should be used within 24 hours.

None known.

  • Toltrazuril should not be administered to animals with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
  • Use with caution in debilitated or dehydrated animals, as these may be more susceptible to adverse reactions.
  • The safety of toltrazuril in pregnant or lactating animals has not been established.
  • Use of toltrazuril in conjunction with other drugs that have an inhibitory effect on dihydrofolate reductase, such as trimethoprim and sulfonamides, may increase the risk of adverse reactions.
  • Toltrazuril should not be used for the treatment of coccidiosis caused by species other than Eimeria spp.

Contraindication

Toltrazuril is contraindicated in animals with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
