Temazepam

Temazepam  is a GABA-A receptor agonist. GABA receptors when stimulated produces inhibitory effects on other neuronal signals. Temazepam is used as a hypnotic agent.

Temazepam is indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia (generally 7 to 10 days).

While the normal adult dose is 15 mg before retiring, some patients may only require 7.5 mg, while others may require 30 mg. A 7.5 mg dose may be enough to improve sleep latency in transitory insomnia. Therapy should be started at 7.5 mg in elderly or disabled individuals until individual responses are known.

Side effects with highest incidence associated with Temazepam are as follows-

  • Drowsiness
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Ataxia
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Jaundice
  • Anxiety
  • Concurrent use of benzodiazepines and opioids, such as Temazepam, can cause extreme drowsiness, respiratory depression, coma, and death. Because of these dangers, simultaneous prescribing of these medications should only be used in patients who have exhausted all other therapeutic alternatives.
  • A presenting symptom of an underlying physical and/or psychological disease could be sleep disruption. As a result, starting symptomatic treatment for insomnia should only be done after a thorough evaluation of the patient. Insomnia that persists after 7 to 10 days of treatment could indicate the presence of a primary psychiatric or medical illness that needs to be evaluated.
  • The emergence of new irregularities of thinking or behavior, as well as the worsening of sleeplessness, could be the result of an undiagnosed mental or physical condition. Such anomalies have also been described in combination with the use of medicines that depress the central nervous system, such as those in the benzodiazepine class. Because several of the worst side effects of benzodiazepines, including Temazepam, tend to be dosage related, it's critical to utilize the smallest effective dose feasible. Patients over the age of 65 are particularly vulnerable.

Contraindication

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other benzodiazepines, such as-
