Telmisartan

Telmisartan belongs to a class of drugs called Angiotensin II receptor blockers or ARBs. It prevents Angiotensin II from binding to Angiotensin receptor 1 and hence antagonizing it's effects.

Telmisartan is indicated for the treatment of-

  • Hypertension
  • Cardiovascular protection.

Telmisartan is available as tablets.

Hypertension: A daily dose of 40 mg is generally sufficient. A daily dose of 20 mg may already be beneficial to some people. The dose of telmisartan can be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily if the target blood pressure is not met.

Cardiovascular protection: The recommended daily intake is 80 mg. It is unknown whether telmisartan doses less than 80 mg are useful in lowering cardiovascular morbidity.

Side effects associated with telmisartan are-

  • Asthenia
  • Dizziness
  • Upper respiratory tract infections (Sinusitis, Pharyngitis)
  • Diarrhea
  • During the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, medications that act on the renin-angiotensin system impair fetal renal function and increase fetal and newborn morbidity and death.
  • Thiazides cross the placental barrier and appear in cord blood. Adverse reactions include fetal or neonatal jaundice and thrombocytopenia
  • Drugs that suppress the renin-angiotensin system, as well as diuretics, can cause changes in renal function, including acute renal failure. Patients with renal artery stenosis, chronic kidney disease, severe congestive heart failure, or volume depletion (e.g., patients with renal artery stenosis, chronic kidney disease, severe congestive heart failure, or volume depletion) may be at a higher risk of developing oliguria, progressive azotemia, or acute renal failure while on MICARDIS HCT.

Contraindication

  • Telmisartan is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to losartan or other ARBs, such as-
  • Telmisartan should not be co-administered with the following drug in patients with diabetes and renal impairment-
