Tazarotene

Tazarotene is a retinoid and vitamin A derivative that is used topically to treat acne and psoriasis. It works by binding to specific receptors in the skin cells and modulating gene expression, resulting in decreased proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes.

Tazarotene is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris and plaque psoriasis.

  • Apply a thin layer of Tazarotene Gel only to the affected area once daily in the evening.
  • Not for ophthalmic, oral, or intravaginal use.
  • If contact with eyes occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.

  • Plaque Psoriasis: Most common adverse reactions occurring in 10 to 30% of patients are pruritus, burning/stinging, erythema, worsening of psoriasis, irritation, and skin pain.
  • Acne Vulgaris: Most common adverse reactions occurring in 10 to 30% of patients are desquamation, burning/stinging, dry skin, erythema and pruritus.

  • Tazarotene is for external use only and should not be ingested.
  • Avoid using tazarotene on damaged or broken skin.
  • Patients should avoid exposure to sunlight, sunlamps, or tanning beds during treatment with tazarotene and use protective clothing and sunscreen when outdoors.
  • Tazarotene may cause skin irritation and should be used with caution in patients with sensitive skin.
  • Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use tazarotene due to its teratogenic effects.
  • It is not known whether tazarotene is excreted in human milk, and nursing mothers should use caution when using this medication.

Contraindication

Tazarotene is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to tazarotene or any of its components.

Tazarotene is also contraindicated in women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
