Sodium Lactate

Sodium Lactate is an electrolyte and urinary pH modifier that contains a mixture of lactic acid and sodium cations. It functions by restoring the normal pH balance of the body, and it also helps to replenish the electrolytes that are lost due to various medical conditions.

Sodium Lactate is used for the treatment of metabolic acidosis, which is a medical condition caused by a build-up of acid in the body. It is also used to treat certain types of dehydration, such as those caused by excessive sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting. Additionally, it may be used in the management of hyponatremia, which is a condition characterized by low levels of sodium in the blood.

Sodium Lactate Injection, USP 50 mEq (5 mEq/mL) is administered intravenously only after addition to a larger volume of fluid. The amount of sodium ion and lactate ion to be added to larger volume intravenous fluids should be determined in accordance with the electrolyte requirements of each individual patient.

The following are the possible adverse reactions of Sodium Lactate, sorted from most common to least common:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Hypervolemia
  • Hypernatremia
  • Hypokalemia
  • Metabolic alkalosis
  • Local irritation at the injection site

  • Sodium Lactate should be used with caution in patients with congestive heart failure, renal impairment, or liver disease.
  • It should not be given to patients who are hypersensitive to sodium lactate or any of its components.
  • The medication should be administered slowly, and the patient's electrolyte levels should be monitored closely to avoid the risk of fluid overload, electrolyte imbalances, and metabolic alkalosis.
  • Sodium Lactate should not be used in patients with hypervolemia or hypernatremia, as it can worsen these conditions.
  • The medication may interact with other medications, so it is important to inform the healthcare provider about all the drugs being taken by the patient.

Contraindication

Sodium Lactate is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to sodium lactate or any of its components.

  • Sodium Lactate Injection, USP 50 mEq is contraindicated in patients suffering from hypernatremia or fluid retention.
  • It should not be used in conditions in which lactate levels are increased (e.g., shock, congestive heart failure, respiratory alkalosis) or in which utilization of lactate is diminished (e.g., anoxia, beriberi).
  • Not indicated for the treatment of lactic acidosis.
