Sodium Fluoride

Sodium Fluoride is an inorganic salt and an electrolyte supplement. Sodium Fluoride provides a source of fluoride ions, which, when ingested, can incorporate into tooth enamel and make it more resistant to decay. Fluoride can also promote remineralization of early cavities and inhibit bacterial enzymes that contribute to dental plaque formation.

Sodium Fluoride is indicated for the prevention of dental caries (tooth decay). It is commonly used in the form of fluoridated water, toothpaste, mouthwash, and other dental products to improve dental health and reduce the risk of cavities.

  • The dosage and administration of Sodium Fluoride depend on the age and specific dental needs of the individual.
  • For fluoridated water, the concentration is typically regulated based on public health guidelines, and individuals should follow the recommendations of local health authorities.
  • For topical fluoride applications (e.g., toothpaste, mouthwash, dental treatments), follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer or dental professional.

Adverse reactions to Sodium Fluoride are generally rare and usually occur with excessive intake. Common adverse reactions may include:

  • Dental fluorosis (mottling or discoloration of tooth enamel) when ingested during tooth development in childhood
  • Nausea and vomiting in cases of acute fluoride poisoning (rare, typically with accidental ingestion of large amounts)
  • Gastrointestinal upset (when excessive amounts are swallowed)

  • Excessive fluoride intake can lead to dental fluorosis, which is a cosmetic concern affecting tooth enamel. Parents should monitor young children's fluoride intake to avoid excessive consumption.
  • Care should be taken to avoid accidental ingestion of fluoride-containing dental products by children, as excessive ingestion can lead to acute fluoride toxicity.
  • Individuals with fluoride-sensitive conditions or who are hypersensitive to fluoride should use fluoride-containing products with caution or as directed by a healthcare professional.

Contraindication

Sodium Fluoride supplements should not be used in individuals with known hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to fluoride.
