Silver Sulphadiazine

Silver sulfadiazine inhibits multiplication of bacteria by acting as competitive inhibitors of p-aminobenzoic acid in the folic acid metabolism cycle. It is used topically as creams.

Indicated as an adjunct for the prevention and treatment of

  • Wound sepsis in patients with second- and third-degree burns.

Apply 1 to 2 times a day to the affected area, with a thickness of roughly 1/16 of an inch.

  • Immediately after hydrotherapy, this medicine should be reapplied to any regions where it has been eliminated by patient activity
  • Treatment should be continued until the burn site has healed enough or is ready for grafting.
  • Unless a serious adverse reaction occurs, this medicine should not be removed from the therapeutic regimen while infection is still a possibility.

  • Sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills, sore throat, mouth sores, red or swollen gums, trouble swallowing;
  • Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under your skin;
  • Pale or yellowed skin, dark colored urine, fever, confusion or weakness;
  • kidney problems: red or pink urine, little or no urinating, swelling, rapid weight gain;
  • Liver problems: nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or
  • Severe skin reaction: fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling.
  • If you use silver sulfadiazine topical during late pregnancy, it may cause major medical complications in your newborn.
  • This medicine should not be given to premature babies or children under the age of two months.

Contraindication

It is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the medicine itself or other sulphonamides such as-
