Salmon Oil
Salmon oil is made from salmon fat. It contains Omega 3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA.
Salmon oil is indicated for-
- Hypertriglyceridemia
- Myocardial infarction
- Joint inflammation associated with osteoarthritis
- mood disorders & impulse control
- age-related macular degeneration
- In hypertriglyceridaemia, it can be taken as a single dose of 4 capsules (4 gm) or twice daily doses of 2 capsules (2 gm).
- In patients who have had a previous myocardial infarction, take 1 capsule (1 gm) daily with food. Before receiving Omega-3 Acid Ethyl Esters, patients should be placed on an appropriate lipid-lowering diet and should maintain this diet throughout treatment.
- The dose for joint inflammation associated with mild arthritis is 2.7 gm daily.
- The dose for mood disorders and impulse control, as well as age-related macular degeneration, is one capsule (1 gm) per day. Alternatively, as directed by a registered physician
Side effects associated with the use of salmon oil include-
- dyspepsia
- nausea
- constipation
- gastritis
- dizziness
During treatment with omega-3-acid ethyl esters, LDL-C levels should be monitored, and laboratory studies to measure the patient's TG levels should be performed on a regular basis.
Contraindication
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug.
