Chlorpheniramine Maleate
Chlorpheniramine belongs to a class of drugs called 1st Generation antihistamines. It is used to treat symptoms related to allergic reactions.
Chlorpheniramine temporarily relieves the following symptoms due to hay fever or other upper respiratory allergies:
- sneezing
- runny nose
- itchy, watery eyes
- itching of the nose or throat
Adults:
The usual adult dose is 4 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 24 mg daily.
Child:
- 6-12 years: 2 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 12 mg daily.
- 2-5 years: 1 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 6 mg daily.
- 1-2 years: 1 mg twice daily.
Chlorpheniramine Maleate is not recommended for children under 1 year.
Common side effects may include:
- dizziness/ drowsiness
- dry mouth, nose, or throat
- constipation
- blurred vision
- feeling nervous or restless
- In patients with glaucoma or prostatic hypertrophy, chlorpheniramine should be administered with care.
- Driving and operating machinery should be done carefully while on chlorpheniramine treatment.
- Asthma patients should be cautious while taking chlorpheniramine.
Contraindication
Chlorpeniramine is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to the drug itself.
There is no contraindications of chlorpheniramine in terms of food and drinks.
Chlorpheniramine is contraindicated in newborns and premature babies.
